What You Will Do

Gannett Fleming is currently seeking a Rail Signal Inspector to join our CalTrain Electrification Team. Responsibilities will include performing signal inspection and signal surveys for railroad and/or rail transit signal systems. This position will observe all aspects of signaling systems and confirm systems are built to customer specifications and contract requirements. The candidate should have experience in the functionality of wayside signaling and at-grade crossing environments from preliminary to final construction and commissioning. Additional responsibilities include monitoring progress and ensuring compliance to engineering plans and specifications.

Job Description and Duties:

  • Inspect contractor’s work and file daily reports.
  • Support schedule development and coordination of work activities with agency operations and other subcontractors and 3rd party functions.
  • Monitor installations and confirm materials and installations have been installed per plans and specifications.
  • Monitor schedule of installations in accordance with baseline schedule and support update activities by scheduler.
  • Ensure that installations adhere to necessary federal, state, and local standards and laws.
  • Assist in the reconciliation in a timely manner of Request for Information submissions by the 3rd party contractors and others.
  • Support the development of status reports and reports to oversight agencies on project status.
  • Assist in the testing, commissioning and acceptance of the equipment by the client through activation for revenue service or as otherwise directed by the client.
  • Review and comment on all Factory Acceptance Testing and Site Acceptance Testing.
  • Review test reports and ensure all required filings take place.
  • Follow QA/QC policies and practices and identify possible quality and safety issues within the scope of the project.


Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree in Civil, Electrical Engineering or Construction Management
  • Minimum five years of experience, with a Class 1 Commuter railroad.
  • Knowledge in the installation, testing, systems integration and commissioning of signal systems.
  • Knowledge with signal equipment manufacturers, consultants, and railroads.
  • Knowledgeable in railroad signal practices and procedures.
  • Knowledgeable and qualified on GCOR and the physical characteristics of an operating railroad.
  • Knowledgeable in FRA, MUTCD and CPUC requirements.
  • Ability to address any safety-related issue to verify a safe working environment.
