What You Will Do

The Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, office of Gannett Fleming has an immediate opening for an energetic, self-starting Internal Communications Manager (ICM). Under the direction of the Sr. Manager, Corporate Communications (SMCC) and working closely with the Corporate Communications Manager (CCM), the ICM will deliver integrated communications that increase employee and stakeholder understanding of corporate strategy and operating goals, motivate and unite more than 2,000 employees to advance the firm’s performance, and enhance company culture in a rapid growth environment.

The candidate is a critical thinker who is able to take a 360-degree degree view of the subject(s) at hand to provide insightful, sound guidance across all departments of the organization, including C-Suite executives, business lines, and Shared Services. A consummate team player and doer, the ICM must demonstrate exceptional writing and editing skills, a keen eye for detail, and the ability to manage multiple work streams. This role also supports external communications projects as needed, such as transitioning internal stories into external content, media opportunities, and social media.



Principal Responsibilities and essential functions

  • Develop and implement internal communications strategies and plans that engage, align, and inspire employees around the firm’s vision and core values as well as its strategic action plan, priorities, and initiatives.
  • Manage the day-to-day implementation of internal communications initiatives and deliverables, and collaborate with SMCC and CCM to ensure appropriate workload distribution. Provide supervision and guidance to junior staff members tasked with internal deliverables to ensure development of thoughtful, deliberate, effective strategies and adherence to the highest level of quality.
  • Act as liaison for critical corporate and business line initiatives, such as acquisitions, business line developments, leadership changes, systematic changes, benefits, talent acquisition, innovation, internal award programs, corporate scholarship program, etc.
  • Formulate key messages that engender understanding, transparency, and perspective while making a positive impact on employee attitudes, morale, and productivity. Draft and/or edit accurate, relevant, and timely content for distribution through internal channels, including emails, company news stories, announcements, talking points, planning documents, collateral, and executive communication. Produce communications on a wide variety of topics, including corporate announcements, benefits, wellness, quality, safety, continuing education, organizational change, and external issues. Coordinate and ensure proper approvals on all materials.
  • Identify and assume the voice of key leaders (e.g., Leadership Team, business line directors, etc.) to develop written content and audio/visual communications targeted to a variety of audiences for use in executive talking points and presentations, business updates, thought leadership articles and op-eds, livestreams, webcasts, and corporate videos.
  • Provide daily oversight of internal electronic news site that features a dozen news articles a week. Review content for adherence to corporate and AP style guides, and conduct follow up with team on corrective actions. Guide editor in management of the editorial calendar to enable flexibility and timeliness of content.
  • Oversee and ensure quality of internal communications infrastructure, including the IntraNet, electronic news network, digital signage, MailChimp, and Yammer. Oversee platform improvements/changes, in collaboration with SMCC/CCM/CCO and key internal stakeholders. Stay abreast of emerging technologies to inform progressive recommendations that elevate the firm’s approach to internal communications.
  • Lead or support the planning, coordination, and production of key communications deliverables, including open enrollment materials and promotion, Employee Guide, talent acquisition resources, change communications, system updates, Annual Report for Stockholders/Employees, etc.
  • Establish quality assurance practices to ensure accurate, error-free work from a growing team of communications professionals. Collaborate with team to identify issues and solutions, as well as develop local work instructions.

Education and Licensing requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in journalism, communications, English, marketing, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience in internal or corporate communications, with a deep background in employee engagement and executive communications.
  • Implementation of evidence- and analytics-based communications campaigns that incorporated research, planning, and evaluation using a variety of metrics.
  • Experience building relationships and working directly with diverse internal stakeholders on day-to-day activities, and a demonstrated ability to influence peers and leaders across an organization on issues that have organization-wide impact. Experience with change management is desirable.
  • Experience with the day-to-day management of staff, preferably a staff of three or more.
  • Superior writing and editing skills, with the ability to draft clear, succinct, and accurate content using proper grammar, spelling, and punctuation. Talented at distilling complex concepts into easily digestible information. Must be fluent in AP style.
  • High proficiency in recognizing and applying global/national/regional social, economic, and policy trends to deliver connective insights that assist internal clients in driving alignment with and execution of company initiatives.
  • Proactive and able to anticipate communications needs, opportunities, and weaknesses.
  • Energetic self-starter and resourceful problem solver who keeps things moving and on track, and demonstrates sound judgement and discretion in matters of significance. Ability to manage concurrent projects/deliverables in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment with a high attention to detail.
  • Strong PC skills, including Microsoft Office/365, SharePoint, and Yammer. A strong understanding of digital communications and social media.
  • Willingness to travel to industry events, regional offices, and professional conferences.
