Responsibilities

Gannett Fleming’s geotechnical engineering practice provides solutions for foundation design and rehabilitation, underground construction, earth structures and water resources. Exploration, analysis and design related to soil, rock and groundwater is an essential part of every project. Our engineers and geologists specialize in foundation design and testing, landslides, sinkholes, mine subsidence, seepage, expansive soils and seismic activity.

Our Geotechnical Practice is currently seeking a self-motivated Geotechnical Project Engineer possessing 5-8 years of related experience to join our office in Toronto, Ontario. This individual will lead and assist senior geotechnical engineers and project managers in planning and overseeing subsurface explorations and performing analyses for infrastructure, transportation, rail, water resources and other types of projects.

 Duties/Responsibilities include:

  • Lead and assist senior staff in planning and overseeing field explorations, construction projects, laboratory testing, design and analysis of shallow and deep foundations for highway and/or rail bridges and major hydraulic structures, stability and seepage analyses of earthen embankments, settlement estimates, lateral earth pressure assessments for retaining walls, and ground improvement assessments for complex sites.
  • Working in a team environment providing geotechnical engineering services;
  • Lead geotechnical engineering and/or project manager for engineering projects for a wide variety of engineering projects for public and private sector clients;
  • Lead and assist senior staff in executing geotechnical engineering projects from the proposal stage, to planning and directing the field program, through data analysis and detailed design, to reporting and delivering solutions to our clients;
  • Providing technical direction to junior staff;
  • Assist senior staff in managing our client relationships, including business and new client development to expand the scope of our existing services; and
  • Performing other duties as required

While the primary focus will be on civil / geotechnical engineering projects in the Greater Toronto Area, opportunities will exist to work with other divisions in Gannett Fleming’s multidisciplinary offices, in Ontario and beyond.

Job Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering required; Master’s Degree with Geotechnical focus preferred. 
  • Currently registered or eligible for registration with PEO/PEng
  • Minimum 5 to 8 years of relevant working experience since graduation
  • A sound base in the application of geotechnical engineering to problem solving
  • Transportation geotechnical engineering with MTO and Rail project experience in Greater Toronto Area
  • Strong interpersonal communication and critical thinking skills
  • Must be willing to travel, including extended periods out of town at remote project sites, regional offices, and as required by the scope of the project.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and ability to work independently and within a team environment.
  • Must have current Driver’s License
